Sunday Destination #3 – Tamarack Cellars

Our 3rd and final airport district wine stop took us to Tamarack Cellars.  This place is one of my go-to tasting rooms in this area of Walla Walla.  There are many reasons for this, including the fact that Boone, the tasting room manager, always provides us with fantastic tastings.  I’ve visited with family, friends, my wife, and solo, and regardless, I always leave a happy man.  Generally speaking, the lineup of wines on the Tamarack tasting list are always very solid! So quite often these wines sell themselves.  However, Boone knows wine.  He also provides ample pours so you can actually experience the aromatics and taste enough of the wine to really get a good feel for how your palate reacts to the wine.  The other thing I really appreciate about this fine gentleman is that he’s always willing to allow me to experience something not on the tasting list.  Typically a higher-end reserve type wine.  On a few occasions he has really opened up the secret vaults!  Each time I’ve purchased wines as well.  The DuBrul Reserves are but a few examples.  Why?  Because Tamarack makes delicious wine, their QPR (quality-to-price ratio) is nice, and they allow you to “taste” before you buy.  I can’t tell you how many times tasting room folks will say, “Sorry, we just aren’t tasting this wine now, but you can buy it if you want to.”  I don’t buy if I can’t taste it, and Boone understands that.  Case and point – he was willing to allow me to taste the 2013 Emerald Release Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a special bottle, individually signed by the winemaker (Danny Gordon) and runs $100 per bottle.  That taste was enough to motivate me to buy two bottles of this elegant cab.  I didn’t even know this wine existed, but because Boone understands his clients and knows what’s important to wine connoisseurs like me, we both ended up winning on this fine day!  Thank you Boone!  I can’t wait to share this great cab with my family and friends.  Until next time!
